The pH of the soil impacts the nutrients that plants can use to thrive. While calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium are less available to plants in very acidic soil, manganese and aluminium can become more available and hazardous to them. Phosphorus and the majority of micronutrients are less accessible in soil that is very alkaline.

When nutritional cations are drawn to the charged surfaces of cortical cells, which are internal root cells, cation ion exchange occurs. The plant root releases a hydrogen ion when cation exchange takes place. The pH of the soil immediately surrounding the root decreases as a result of cation exchange in the root.
