One of the World's greatest spectacles of animal migration is the annual circular trek of the wildebeest through the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Africa. Each year the availability of grazing land drives nearly 1.7 million wildebeest into river crossings, such as shown in the photo. The wildebeest begin by walking across the river in the shallow waters close to the bank, but end up swimming across in the middle of the fast-moving river, where the water is deeper. Eventually they reach the shallow area near the other bank and are able to walk out on the other side. This produces the characteristic zigzag pattern seen in the photo. The drawing shows a view of the river crossing from above and the path traced out by the wildebeest. Assume that the wildebeest walk at 1.00 m/s and can swim at 2.00 m/s with respect to still water. Use the distances in the drawing to calculate (a) how long it takes them to cross the river and (b) the speed of the river current.

One of the World's greatest spectacles of animal migration is the annual circular trek of the wildebeest through the Serengeti National
