In this essay, I would like you to compare and contrast the political visions of three-to-four thinkers and/or movements that we have studied this semester, specifically concerning their analysis of Black struggles for self-determination in the US, and their ideas regarding how Black people ought to struggle for freedom and self-determination into the future. As you conduct your analysis, you should consider how gender, race, region, class, and/or violence play into these thinkers' ideas about the meaning of Black freedom and self-determination (you need not attend comprehensively to all of these factors, but they should help open up your own analyses of these thinkers and movements ideas). Above all, I want you to consider how these thinkers conceive of the role of the US nation-state in the achievement of Black self-determination can it be a vehicle for this project, is it inherently opposed to this project, or is it something more complicated? Thinkers that you might focus on include W.E.B. Du Bois, Zora Neale Hurston, Paul Robeson, Claudia Jones, the members of the Combahee River Collective, Dizzy Gillespie, James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr., etc.; movements that you might consider include the United Negro Improvement Association, the National Women's Convention of the National Baptist Convention, the washerwomen's strikes of Atlanta, SCLC, the Black Panthers, etc.
