O Part 2: Position Data The table below shows position data for 8 different objects. Let east be the positive direction & west be the negative direction. Based on the data, determine whether each object SPED UP THE ENTIRE TIME, SLOWED DOWN THE ENTIRE TIME, or TRAVELED AT A CONSTANT VELOCITY. For each scenario (sped up, slowed down, & constant velocity) choose all that apply. Elapsed Time Position Position Position Position Position Position Position Position of object of object of object of object of object of object of object of object 7 8 (s) (yd) (m) (mm) (ft) (in) (cm) (km) (mi) 77 -30 -7 -2 -27 23 -57 1 73 -37 -3 -11 12 -23 17 -63 65 -43 -19 15 -15 11 -68 3 53 -48 -26 18 -3 -72 37 -52 3 -32 21 13 -1 -75 Sped up Slowed down Constant velocity
Displacement, Velocity and Acceleration
In classical mechanics, kinematics deals with the motion of a particle. It deals only with the position, velocity, acceleration, and displacement of a particle. It has no concern about the source of motion.
Linear Displacement
The term "displacement" refers to when something shifts away from its original "location," and "linear" refers to a straight line. As a result, “Linear Displacement” can be described as the movement of an object in a straight line along a single axis, for example, from side to side or up and down. Non-contact sensors such as LVDTs and other linear location sensors can calculate linear displacement. Non-contact sensors such as LVDTs and other linear location sensors can calculate linear displacement. Linear displacement is usually measured in millimeters or inches and may be positive or negative.
