The beta cells of the pancreatic islets secrete insulin and the stimulus for secretion is high levels of glucose in blood. The blood glucose levels are reduced by this hormone and it has an effect on some tissues of body. These tissues are muscle, red blood cells and fat cells. The insulin causes the uptake of glucose by these cells. This causes the lowering of glucose levels in blood.
