It political and military rivalry, spying, propaganda, and an arms race. The Cold War began right after World War II when the United States and the Soviet Union became the two biggest countries with different beliefs. The United States was a capitalist democracy while the Soviet Union was a communist dictatorship. They don't approve of how the world should be run after the war. The United States wanted to encourage democracy and free markets and the Soviet Union wanted to spread communism. The Cold War took place in different parts of the world which were Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The two supported opposing sides in disagreements like the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Afghan War. They also hurried to build up large stockpiles of nuclear weapons to prevent the other countries from using them. The Cold War ended when the Soviet Union fell down in 1991 which was the end of communism as an international force. After the Cold War the United States became the world's only country which was able to challenge its rivals.
