Phenergan or Promethazine belongs to the class of antihistamines which are used in the treatment of nausea, vomiting, motion sickness, itching, running nose, watering eyes, hives, etc. The side effects of Phenergan include drowsiness, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, nightmares, seizures, bleeding, sore throat, etc. Immediate medical attention must be given if there is uncontrollable movement of eyes, tongue, face lips, etc. Children who are younger than 2 years must not be given Phenergan. Consuming alcohol when taking Phenergan can increase the side effects. If one is allergic to promethazine and drugs like chlorpromazine, fluphenazine, etc, then Phenergan must be avoided. Phenergan must be avoided if one has asthma or lower respiratory tract disorder. It is taken before bedtime and before meals. For treating motion sickness, it is advisable to take Phenergan one hour before traveling and when used for surgery it is taken the night before the surgery. The drug must be stored at room temperature away from light and moisture. Phenergan can make one easily prone to sunburns so avoid going out in sun and avoid tanning beds. Use protective clothing and sunscreen to prevent sunburns. Do not drive or indulge in activities that needs one to be alert when taking Phenergan.
