Name the hormones of the anterior and posterior pituitary, and
discuss their functions.

The pituitary gland is a pea sized, reddish-grey colored gland and lies at the base of the brain, behind the orbits in a depression of the sphenoid bone of the skull called sella turcica. It is attached to the hypothalamus by means of a slender stalk called infundibulum. The gland is also known as hypophysis and physiologically it is divisible into two lobes namely, anterior adenohypophysis and the posterior neurohypophysis. They are both derived from the ectoderm but have different origin.
The adenohypophysis (anterior lobe) originated from the roof of the buccal cavity in the form of an outgrowth called Rathke's pouch and gets detached from it. The neurohypophysis (posterior lobe) originates as a down growth from the surface of the hypothalamus but remains attached to it by the hypophyseal stalk.
