n=4 l=1

n=2 l=2

n=3 l=2

n=5 l=1 ml=-1

Find the maximum number of orbitals for each

Expert Solution
Step 1

Quantum numbers are the set of numbers used to define the position and energy of the electron in an atom.

The four quantum numbers are:

  1. Principle quantum number (n)
  2. Angular momentum (ℓ)
  3. Magnetic quantum number (m)
  4. Spin quantum number (ms).

The number of orbitals for the given values of the quantum numbers has to be determined.

Step 2

The number of orbitals within a subshell is determined by the magnetic quantum number,m.

Consequently, the value of mdepends on the orbital angular momentum quantum number l.

For n=4 l=1:

m=-1, 0, +1

So, the maximum number of orbitals=3 (p-subshell)

For n=2 l=2:

m=-2,-1, 0, +1, +2

So, the maximum number of orbitals=5 (d subshell)
