Facial muscles are muscles found under the facial skin. These are 20 skeletal muscles. They are all controlled by a single nerve (the facial nerve or cranial nerve VII), and are supplied blood by a single artery (the facial artery). The muscles originate from bones or fascia of the face or cranium, and insert into the facial skin. When they contract, they pull the facial skin, producing different facial expressions.
Based on their functions, the facial muscles can be divided into three groups - the orbital muscles, the nasal muscles and the oral muscles. The orbital muscles control the movements of the eyelids and the forehead. The nasal group controls the movement of the nose, whereas the oral group controls the movements of the mouth and the lips.
