The specific gravity of a mineral is defined as the ratio of weight of the mineral in air and the weight of equal volume of water.
Let the weight of mineral in air = Wa
Weight of mineral in water = Ww
Then specific gravity is given by,
Sp. Gravity = Wa/(Wa-Ww) --------------1
Another formula for specific gravity is,
Specific gravity = Density of mineral/Density of water
Density of mineral = sp. Gravity × Density of water
From equation 1 and equation 2 we can find out the density of two mineral then,
We know density = mass/volume
