Step 1Introduction
Vitamins
- Vitamins are the nutrients that are required in small amounts in a balanced diet.
- Deficiency diseases are caused due to the improper intake of vitamins in the diet.
- The human body can't synthesize all vitamins.
- Plant cells can synthesize vitamins.
- On the basis of their solubility in water, vitamins can be divided into water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins.
- Water-soluble vitamins are Vitamin B and Vitamin C.
- Fat-soluble vitamins are Vitamins A, D, E, and K.
Water-soluble Vitamins
- Water-soluble vitamins are soluble in water hence they are not stored in the body and can be excreted through excretory waste.
- Vitamin B and Vitamin C are water-soluble vitamins.
- Vitamin B is not a single vitamin but consists of around 13 different vitamins forming a complex known as Vitamin B complex.
- Vitamin B is actively involved in the coenzyme system in the human body hence performs a variety of functions whereas Vit C strengthens the immune system (WBC synthesis).
Fat-soluble Vitamins
- Fat-soluble vitamins are either terpenoids (Vit A, E, K ) or steroids (Vit D).
- Being fat-soluble can be stored in the body and can be toxic if taken in excessive amounts.
- Vitamin A takes part in retinol formation in the eyes. Vitamin D in calcium and phosphorous absorption.
- Vitamin E in mitochondrial protection, Vitamin K in blood clotting.
