Question
**Match the Following**

1. **Actin filaments**
   - Support cell shape and fix organelles in place

2. **Intermediate filaments**
   - Most concentrated just under the cell membrane and help maintain the shape of cellular projections

3. **Microtubules**
   - [Choose]

This section of the educational site involves matching cellular components with their corresponding functions. Users are prompted to select the appropriate description from a dropdown menu for each type of filament. The actin filaments have been correctly matched, while the microtubules require selection from the options provided.

Expert Solution
Step 1

In eukaryotes, a cell possesses a number of membrane-lined organelles. They have a two-envelope system of organization- a membranous envelope around the whole cell and a membranous envelope around cell organelles. Cytoskeletal structures, membrane-bound organelles, and organizations of genetic material into chromosomes are some important features of eukaryotic cells. They occur in Protista, fungi, Metaphyta (plants), and Metazoa (animals). The range of size is 5-500 microns.

Eukaryotic cells possess a submicroscopic complex supportive framework of protein fibers and tubules called the cytoskeleton. It extends throughout a cell, through the cytoplasm. The cytoskeleton provides mechanical support, accounts for all types of internal transport, cyclosis, and external cell movements. Cytoskeleton brings about colloidal changes as well as maintains the shape of the cell and its extension. It also regulates the distribution and orientation of cell organelles.

Cytoskeletons are formed of three types of elements- microtubules, actin filaments (also called microfilaments), and an intermediate filament. They are called cytoskeletal structures. They are proteinaceous filaments and tubules that provide intracellular support, movements, and transport of materials.
