The geological history of any map can be described by ordering the youngest and oldest layer present in the map. The oldest and oldest units are generalized by knowing some rules. The rules are-
Law of superposition- It states that in a sedimentary sequence the older layer is found at the base and the youngest bed is always found at the top of the sequence.
Law of original horizontality- The sedimentary layer always deposited in a horizontal manner.
Law of cross-cutting relationship- Any igneous intrusion or dike that cross-cuts to the country rock always younger than the country rock.
