List at least 2 things that may go into finding an optimal approach temperature (HINT: think about material cost).
Heuristics are time-saving approximations that come from years of optimization. While limited, heuristics can be used to greatly simplify some engineering problems. This semester we have made extensive use of the 10-degree approach temperature heuristic for heat exchanger network design.
List at least 2 things that may go into finding an optimal approach temperature (HINT: think about material cost).
Optimal temperature: optimal temperature in heat exchanger is the minimum temperature which is required to cool down or to heat up the process fluid.
The optimal temperature is the difference between the outlet temperatures of the process fluid to the inlet temperature of the utility fluid. Utility fluid is a fluid which may be hot (steam) or cold (cooling water) used to heat up or cool down the temperature of the process fluid.
