Sleep has traditionally been divided into categories, awake, light, sleep, and random eye moment sleep. Each stage of sleep is essential for maintaining physical and mental health. The time taken by every phase of the sleep cycle can be different. Majority of the night our body spends in light sleep.
Melatonin is an endogenous hormone. It is produced by the pineal gland. It regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Indications of melatonin are shift work disorder, circadian rhythm disorder, insomnia. During day time retina absorbs light and sends the signal to the suprachiasmatic nucleus to suppress the melatonin secretion from the pineal gland that helps in stay awake. The exact opposite happens during day time.
Hence the melatonin should administer before 2 hours of bedtime to help get sleep during day time to regulate the sleep cycle.
