JEF208E Computer Applications in Geophysics Application Pickwin and Plotrefa Seismic refraction is a geophysical technique that uses the refraction of seismic energy (P or S waves) at subsurface interfaces to delineate subsurface properties. The seismic waves travel well beyond the target depth and their arrival times are recorded by seismographs. These arrival times are then plotted on a travel time graph, which shows the relationship between the propagation distance of the seismic waves and their corresponding arrival times. In this application the forward and reverse shot measurements are given in SG2 format. The inter- receiving distance and the distance from the source to the first geophone are 3m for both the forward and reverse shot measurements. Using the given data, follow the steps to obtain the velocity-depth model in the below. 1. Load the forward and reverse shot data with the geometry of measurements and proper display parameters. 2. Pick the first arrivals for each measurement. After picking, calculate the velocity for each layer. Do not forget to save the results as .vs format for Plotrefa. 3. In Plotrefa, open the first picks respectively, and assign the layers. 4. Invert the data according to number of layers. 5. Interpret the output model considering the velocity and thickness of layer(s).
