Question

This video by Scott Brande gives an overview of the process of identifying sedimentary rocks: (https://youtu.be/gwHpKwuAQUU).  There are 7 unknown rocks listed on the Sedimentary Rock Table on the sheet to identify.  On the website https://seg.georockme.com/unknowns by Scott Brande, from the Unknown Samples page, click on the sample number (A01, A03, A05, etc…).  This will take you to the individual sedimentary rock webpage with the physical properties of the sample explained.  By scrolling down on the page, be sure to watch the videos on the webpages:

  • Whole Rock Video & Hi-Rez Images - Can you determine the size, shape and sorting of the grains? Do you see any fossils?
  • HCl Acid Test – does it fizz when HCl acid is applied?
  • Hardness Test – does it scratch the glass? Review your minerals lab to see which minerals scratch the glass, and which do not.
  • Combustibility - Does it ignite under a flame?
