List the common infertility problems in women. What is the major infertility problem in men? Is it correctable?
Expert Solution
Step 1
The basic meaning of an infertile individual is an individual who can not reproduce or who is sterile. Infertility in an individual may develop due to several reasons like unhealthy gametes and disfunction in the oviduct. The "male reproductive" system is crucial to perform several functions such as maintaining, transport, produce sperm and semen. Also, to release sperm inside the female vagina while having sex. The female system also performs many functions and allows the formation of a zygote via fertilization of gametes.
Step 2
The major cause of infertility in men are:
- Unusual production of sperm because of the undescended testicles, genetic defects, health problems like chlamydia, diabetes, gonorrhea, HIV. Also, enlarged or expanded veins inside the testes can alter the sperm quality.
- Difficulty in delivery of sperm because of the various sexual problems like "premature ejaculation", structural problems like an obstruction in the testicle, or injury in reproductive organs.
- Overexposure to some environmental factors like pesticides, radiation, and some chemicals. Marijuana, cigarette smoking, anabolic steroids, alcohol, and medications to treat infections, depression and high BP can affect fertility.
- Continues exposure to heat can enhance the body temperature may alter sperm production.
- Damage related to cancer, treatment for cancer can also affect sperm production.
