The process of fertilization marks the starting of pregnancy. In this process the egg fuses with the sperm. Once the egg is fertilized, it forms the zygote. The zygote then divides and gets implanted in the uterine wall. The development of the embryo and of the fetus during the gestation period is known as the prenatal development. This process starts with fertilization. After that the zygote formed divides to form a blastocyst and then it undergoes embryogenesis to form a full grown baby. The blastocyst gets implanted on the uterine wall and forms an organ known as the placenta. The placenta is connected to the growing fetus by means of the umbilical cord. The blood vessels that go through the placenta provides the fetus with oxygen and nutrients. The gestation period in human beings is about 9 months. The babies that are born before the gestation period ends are known as pre-term babies and the babies that are born after the completion of the gestation period are known as full term babies. The early stages in the process of gestation is same for all mammals but the later parts of the gestation period is different in different mammals. Also the time period for gestation may also vary across the various taxa.
