Nervous system is specialized for receiving the stimulus and conducting the impulse. It is made up of two types of cells namely neurons (nerve cells) and neuroglia (glia cells). Neurons form the basic structural and functional unit of nervous tissue. The neuroglia cells protect, support and provide nourishment.
During a stimulus initiated either inside or outside the body, neurons generate and transmit the electrical impulses to the next neuron or to the receiving end. This is called as action potential. The nerve signals that are transmitted can be both electrical as well as chemical. When a signal travels down the axon, it is electrical and when the transmission from one neuron to another, it is chemical. This is because neurons do not come in contact with each other.
