Question

Is hormone secretion generally regulated by negativefeedback or positive-feedback mechanisms?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The cellular activities must be regulated to achieve homeostasis, achieved by Feedback mechanisms by producing hormones. The feedback mechanisms are created inside the body. Two major feedback loops occurring in humans include positive and negative.

Step 2
  • Negative feedback occurs to decrease the production of hormones. The product decreases its production to bring things back to normal. For example, the thyroid gland works on negative feedback. The hypothalamus secretes thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). It activates the pituitary to secrete thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH activates the thyroid to secrete hormones. The secretion of hormones becomes too high; the feedback is stimulated to stop the production by inhibiting the hypothalamus.
  • Positive feedback increases the production of the product. This leads to extreme secretion—for example, milk production by the mother. The suckling reflex of the baby causes the pituitary to secrete more prolactin. Prolactin increases the production of milk as the baby suckles.
