Answer #4 using data from #3
3. An investigator wants to assess whether the use of a specific medication given to infants
bom prematurely is associated with developmental delay. Fifty infants who were given
the medication and fifty comparison infants who were also bom prematurely but not
given the medication will be selected for the analysis. Each infant will undergo extensive
testing at age 2 for various aspects of development. Identify the type of study proposed
and indicate its specific strengths and weaknesses.

Expert Solution
Step 1

3.

The given study is a cohort study for children who were born prematurely. this is because the children will be selected for the analysis and extensive testing will be performed when the infants reach at age 2 and this gives rise to prospective nature of this study. Here, the cohort will be designed in such a way that it will include the children who were given medication (that is, first group who is exposed) and the children who were not given medication(that is , second group who is not exposed)

The strength of the given study include that this study is prospective in nature that gives permissions to its investigators to estimate the prevalence of development in the two comparison groups. It allows the investigators to judge the association between the exposure (medication) and outcome(development)

The weakness of the given study is that there is possibility of existence of confounding variable. This is so because it is possible that there are other exposures too, other than medication and related to development delay, but they have not been measured.
