Transcribed Image Text:As Mechanical Engineer, you are required to investigate the safety of a simple
structure subjected to a load P as depicted in the figure below:
2.0 m
(1)
X
1.4 m
B
(2)
1.7 m
C
1.2 m
The structure consists of two solid cylindrical steel rods AB and BC, having a diameter
of 50 mm. The elastic modulus of steel is 200 GPa. The rods are pinned connected.
Furthermore, the joint B is restrained from any translation along the z-direction.
To ensure its safety, a minimum safety factor of 3 against possible buckling is required
for each rod. If the applied load P = 60 kN, investigate whether the safety requirement
is met.
