Frederick Douglass published his biography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave Written by Himself. The book focused on Douglass' life as a slave while living in Maryland. After publishing his biography, Douglass sought refuge in Europe to avoid being murdered in the United States. He returned to the United States years later, after British abolitionists bought his freedom.
Nat Turner leads a rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia. Turner's rebellion caused Virginia's state legislature to briefly consider the abolishment of slavery for measures of security.
