The covalent bond is formed by the overlap of the atomic orbitals between the atoms of similar electronegativity.

On the basis of the type of orbital overlapping the bonds are of two types:

  1. Sigma bond: Sigma bond is formed by the overlapping of the hybrid atomic orbitals on the bonding axis. The sigma bonds are symmetrical along the intramolecular axis.

  2. Pi-bond: Pi-bond is formed by the lateral overlap between the unhybridized p-orbitals. The pi-bonds are not symmetrical along the intramolecular axis.
