Question

In this experiment we investigate the effect of isotopes on chemical kinetics. There are three hydrogen isotopes (protium = just one proton / deuterium = one proton + one neutron / tritium = one proton + two neutrons). Deuterium (D) is stable; tritium (T) is radioactive. We will monitor the decay (by hydrolysis) of acetic anhydride in water using UV absorption spectroscopy.  I had a hard time saving the data and transferring it off the lab computers just like you earlier in the semester.  The experiment involves two runs: (1) in normal [light] water which is H2O; and (2) in heavy water which is D2O. From the absorbance data we can determine the effective rate constant and reaction order for the reaction in the different types of water.  We are especially interested in the differences: will the reaction be faster or slower in heavy water? Will the difference be significant or very slight?
