Globalization is one of the key processes shaping human geographies in the 21st century. Although globalization operates at a planetary scale, its effects are felt in the spaces and routines of daily life. For this assignment, you are asked you to observe and analyze how globalization manifests in your own everyday experiences. Objectives • • Apply core geographic concepts of place, space and scale • Identify concrete examples of how global processes shape local contexts • Develop skills in observation and analysis Instructions 1. Choose two aspects of daily life from the following list that you will use to explore the influences of globalization: ○ Material goods - commodities, food ○ Media & entertainment о Technology & communication о Social connections and relationships O Linguistic or cultural landscapes 2. For each aspect, identify at least two (2) but maximum three (3) specific examples of how globalization is evident. Your examples could include: Objects that are produced or sourced internationally ○ Media content or formats that originate elsewhere ○ ○ Technologies that compress time and space Personal ties that cross national boundaries O Linguistic or cultural influences that reflect global flows 3. For each example, note the specific places or settings where you encounter it in your day-to- day routines. 4. Analyze how each example illustrates the reach of globalization into the local spaces and rhythms of everyday life. Consider, for example: O The global processes or connections embodied in the example O How the example illustrates the interaction between global and local scales о How the example links your local context to distant places O How the presence of the example in your daily life reflects the localization of global phenomena 5.
