Question

In the combustion of hydrogen gas, hydrogen reacts with oxygen from the air to form water vapor.

If you burn 58.3g of hydrogen and produce 521g of water, how much oxygen reacted?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The chemical equation for combustion of hydrogen gas is given as

           H2 (g) + 1/2O2 (g) ----> H2(g)

From this chemical equation we can say that for one mole of hydrogen gas will required half mole of oxygen gas for combustion to produce one mole of water molecule. First we will find out number of moles of hydrogen gas and water from given data.

No. Of moles of H2  = (mass of hydrogen/                                                 molar mass of hydrogen)

                                    =  ( 58.3 g)/(2 g/mole)

                                    = 29.15 mole of H

No. Of moles of H2O = (mass of water/                                                          molar mass of H2O)

                                      = ( 521 g)/(18 g/mole)

                                      = 28.944 mole of H2O
