Streptococcus is a spherical shaped coccus, gram-positive when gram stained bacterium that comes from the family of Strepcoccaceae of the phylum Firmicutes. The cells join from each other in a single axis that appears like a chain-like formation. The various species of Streptococcus are classified on the basis of hemolytic properties. On the basis of hemolysis, they are categorized into three groups; Alpha-haemolytic, Beta-haemolytic and Gamma-haemolytic groups. They are responsible for many pathogenic cases.
