Expert Solution
Step 1

When an atom of any element is subjected to electromagnetic radiation, the electrons tend to absorb some amount of energy from the incoming radiation. This excites the electrons that absorbed the energy.

When the spectrum is observed after electrons absorb the energy of certain frequency, the spectrum shows dark lines in the region where electron absorbed the energy. Each element absorbs only certain wavelength of energy. The spectrum generated after the absorption of energy is absorption spectrum. The electrons that are excited after absorbing energy, comes down to lower energy  state  or ground state with release of photon of certain wavelength. The spectrum that is obtained when the electron return to  lower energy level or ground state is emission spectrum.
