1. Identify the oxidation and reduction half-reactions and write them separately. 

2) Balance all atoms other than oxygen and hydrogen.

3) Balance oxygen atoms using water molecules.

4) Balance hydrogen atoms using hydrogen ions.

5) If the medium is basic, neutralize the hydrogen ions using hydroxyl ions.

6) Then balance the charges using electrons.

7) Add the two half-reactions such that the number of electrons on either side is equal.
