In mass spectroscopy, the gaseous sample molecules are converted into charged particles by the ion source. A beam of high energy electrons is emitted from a filament which strike the stream of molecules admitted from the sample. The electron-molecule collision strips an electron from the molecule, creating a cation. These positive ions move towards the magnetic field with the help of accelerating plates. In the magnetic field, the particles are deflected according to their mass to charge ratio i.e. m/z ratio.
