Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition causing weakness, pain, tingling, and numbness in the hands. This is due to the compression of a major nerve that runs through the wrist.
A narrow passage found in the wrist formed by carpal bones is called the carpel tunnel. The tunnel's roof is made of a strong connective tissue called the transverse carpal ligament. As the ligaments that bound the tunnel are rigid, it has very little room for stretching. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tissues surrounding the flexor tendons bulge causing the tunnel to narrow down, exerting pressure on the nerve passing through it.
