I think the Scarborough 11 are considered a family. According to the book, “The group I includes two school teachers, a college professor, employees of a clinic, and of a cultural center, and a stay-at-home dad. They share the renovation costs, the monthly bills, and the household chores. Each pair of adults cooks dinner for everyone one night a week” (P.13). The main reason being that they all share responsibilities in a household. The traditional definition of family is “related by blood, marriage, civil union, or adoption” (P.13).  However, I believe that for individuals to be called a family is through their relationships with each other whether they are blood related or not. Just as it states in the book, “adoption” is still the definition that the U.S Census Bureau uses to be called a family. Adopting an individual or individuals is outside of their own blood, which means it’s the parents’ call if they want to call their adoptive child a family. An example of what’s considered a family in my opinion is friends living together in one roof. Those who decide they no longer want to live with their blood related family, live with those they consider their family such as their close friends. They are not related at all, but through emotional support, they become a family. When Scarborough 11 sued the city in federal court challenging the definition of family, the Hartford withdrew their lawsuit due to public pressure. This implies that the Zoning law is not in the right. Zoning Law is merely made by man who has their own definition of family. In the end, it is the people who contributes greatly to society and supporting others who will rise.
