Question

I need help finding the therotical yield and the percent yield with the data provided:

mass of filter paper crude= 0.184 g

mass of filter paper+ crude product=1.211 g

mass of filter paper pure=0.182 g

mass of filter paper + pure product= 0.809 g

melting point of pure product= 105-110

Mass of fitter paper(crude): 0,184
Mass of filter paper + crude product:1.211g
Mass of filter paper (pure): Oi182g
Mass of filter paper + pure producti O,801g
Melting point of pure product: I 05-WO°C

Synthesis of Dibenzalacetone (1,5-Diphenyl-14-pentadien-3-one)
By Mixed-Aldol Condensation
General Equation:
СНО
NaOH (aq)
+ 2 H20
58.09
z84.79 g/mol
General Procedure:
Into a clean 25 mL round-bottom-flask (RBF) equipped with magnetic stirring bar place 4.0 mL of 10
% sodium hydroxide solution, and add 3.2 mL of 95 % ethanol, 40 mL of benzaldehyde. Finallý add 0.15 mL
of acetone to the reaction mixture. Cap the RBF and mix the reaction mixture continuously for 30 minutes. If
no solid product forms, open the container and scratch inside the RBF, under the liquid with a glass rod. After
30 minutes, remove the liquid from the vial using a Pasteur pipette by squeezing the bulb of the pipette,
pressing the pipette tip flat against the bottom of the vial, and bringing the liquid up while leaving the crystals
in the RBF. Add 4.0 mL of cold water, cap the RBF, and swirl the RBF to wash the crystals. Remove this
wash liquid, as you did previously with the pipette method, and wash the crystals twice more with water.
After the third wash, make sure not to leave any water behind. Determine the weight of the crude slightly wet
product. Add minimum amount of hot 95 % ethanol until all solid dissolves. When all the solid has dissolved,
slowly cool the liquid in the vial/RBF to recrystallize. Finally cool the vial/RBF in ice and remove the excess
liquid with the pipette. Wash with 1.0 mL of ice cold ethanol while the flask is in ice. Dry the product by
placing the solid in a small Buchner Funnel. Determine the final weight of dry product. Calculate the percent
yield, and percent recovered from recrystallization, and report the melting point range of your product.
Obtain UV spectrum of your sample. Indicate the lmax of the compound.
