Treaty of Versailles
Activity
Counterfactual Collaborative Writing Assignment
The Treaty of Versailles imposed by the victorious Allied nations in June 1919, formally ended
the Great War, but its terms sowed the seeds for the next one just twenty years later. Taking what
you've learned already and referencing relevant primary documents, such as the original treaty
(www.loc.gov/r/program/bib/ourdocs/versailles.html). Could your group representing the major
wartime powers craft an alternate peace treaty, which would ensure that the War to End All Wars
was indeed the last major European conflict of the 20 century?
Days 1-2
The class will be divided into groups composed of six students, who will each represent a peace
delegate from one of the major powers at the close of WWI. These powers include the British
Empire, the United States, the Kingdom of Italy, the French Third Republic, the German Weimar
Republic and the Soviet Union. Each group should pick a secretary (the person with the best
handwriting) to write down your proposed peace treaty, which must be at least two hand written
pages (three for honors) in length. It must explain the terms of the peace as well as addressing the
issues of war reparations, border changes, war guilt, self determination, colonial possessions
and the possibility of establishing a new international league for the preservation of peace.
Any changes to the pre-1914 borders must be indicated on the presentation map with a color-
coded key. Each proposed treaty must have the unanimous support of all its members, so
discussion and compromise is essential. Each peace treaty must also sight at least six primary
sources that were referenced in the course of the writing assignment. Students who fail to
contribute should have their names crossed off the final draft, so as to not earn credit for other
people's work.
