Introduction

Experimental research or experiment in psychology refers to the research design in which manipulating one variable causes a change in another variable. In this research method, an experimental group and a control group of samples are taken. The experimental group is the one in which the independent variable is manipulated whereas the control group is the one in which no changes are made. Hence, the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable is measured by comparing the experimental group and the control group.

Independent Variable
In a research experiment, the manipulated variable is the one that is changed by the researcher to measure the effects of the same during the study. The manipulated variable is also known as an independent variable. A researcher can decide whether to increase or decrease the manipulated variable during the research experiment. The researcher wishes to understand how this change in the manipulated variable has an effect on the controlled variable.

Dependent Variable
The dependent variable or control variable refers to the variable that is being measured after manipulating the independent variable. In other words, the dependent variable is dependent on the independent variable and varies according to the change in the independent variable.

Extraneous Variable:
Extraneous variables are the variables in a research study that are not the independent variable but could still affect the results of the experiment. In a research study, if the extraneous variables are not controlled appropriately, they may become unequally present in the experimental and control groups and have an effect on the dependent variable.
