Social Workers and Young Children 

I had the opportunity to complete my service-learning hours alongside Miranda Burnett, a social worker for the Bullitt County Public School District. During my hours, I observed some very heartfelt conversations amongst Mrs. Burnett and her middle school clients. The Bullitt County School District received grants in order to hire their social workers in the district for five years, this grant supplied the district with five social workers. Due to COVID-19, the school districts were closed for in person learning, and the meetings were conducted via zoom. Many of the clients I observed were facing mental disorders including anxiety, and depression. Most of these children are facing their battles alone as their parents aren't in the picture, or simply don’t understand or care. The clients I observed were all extremely hopeful and excited to receive their weekly zoom call from Mrs. Burnett. Mrs. Burnett made activities for each of the clients regarding their situations in order to help them cope, open up, or simply feel more comfortable talking about their mental health and current situations. Many of these young children have had their childhoods taken away by their battle against depression and have been forced to grow up earlier than their peers. In this paper, I will be discussing my time shadowing a LCSW by including a reflection, personal awareness, and intellectual analysis.
