After fertilization, the zygote and its associated membranes referred as the conceptus. During the journey of conceptus to the uterus, the zygote undergoes 5 to 6 rapid mitotic cell divisions. Each cleavage doesn’t increase the volume of conceptus but results in more cells. Each cell produced by the cleavage is known as blastomere.
In the absence of large amount of yolk, 4 major types of cleavage are observed in isolecithal cells or in mesolecithal cells. Isolecithal cells are the cells with a small even distribution of the yolk and the mesolecithal or microlecithal cells are the cells with moderate amount of the yolk.
