As the electroplating process continues, positively charged ions (of metals or hydrogen) are formed on the surface of the anode, transferred to the cathode, and deposited on its surface as the negatively charged ions move toward the anode where they are discharged.

Such an ion transfer process leads to the formation of thin areas of electrolyte (diffusion layers) adjacent to the electrodes where there are ion concentration gradients. The concentration behind the regions (bulk concentration) is constant with respect to the distance from the electrodes.
