The boat observes a strong echo after 0.460 s in a direction with an angle of 10.0° to the water surface. The captain assumes that the water's temperature is constant 15.0 °C and based on this calculates the distance to the assumed the shoal of fish and how deep below the water surface it is. The assumption of constant however, the water temperature is incorrect: the water temperature is stratified and drops rapidly to 7.0 °C at a depth of 5.0 m below the transmitter. How much error does the captain make in calculating the distance to the shoal in height and length respectively? A good approximation for the temperature dependence of the speed of sound in water is v = 1412.0 + 4.0×T, where T is the temperature of the water expressed in °C.
