The Pauli exclusion principle is as follows: The exact set of all four quantum numbers cannot be identically shared by any two electrons in the same atom. As a result, electrons can share the same orbital (a set of the quantum numbers n, l, and ml ), but only if the values of their spin quantum numbers, or ms , differ. There can only be two values of the spin quantum number ±12, so only two electrons can share an orbital (and if two electrons are located in the same orbital, they must have opposite spins). Therefore, only zero, one, or two electrons can occupy any atomic orbital.
