Question

How is marijuana addiction different than heroine addiction?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Marijuana contains delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a mind-altering or psychoactive chemical, and other related compounds which when consumed create a feeling of "high" in individuals. When marijuana is smoked, the chemical reaches the bloodstream through the lungs and from there it reaches the brain and other organs.

The chemical then acts on the cannabinoid receptors present in the brain cells and influences cognitive functioning such as memory, concentration, thinking, coordinated movement, and sensory and time perception. Marijuana use can lead to marijuana use disorder which in extreme cases leads to addiction because people develop dependence, where they feel withdrawal symptoms when they don't get the drug. Dependence occurs when the brain becomes adapted to large quantities of the drug by reducing production and sensitivity to its own neurotransmitter called endocannabinoid.

Marijuana addiction symptoms include distorted perception of time, space, and reality, impaired coordinated movements, difficulty in tasks such as problem solving, and issues related to learning and memory. Physiological symptoms include red and blurry eyes, constant, mucus-filled cough, arrhythmic heartbeat, dry mouth, anxiety, paranoia, fear, slow reaction time, etc. Withdrawal symptoms include irritability, sleeplessness, decreased appetite, anxiety, and drug craving.
