How is jungian theory more positive than freudian theory.
Expert Solution
Religion
Carl Jung was more positive than Freud in his views about religion and humanity.
In terms of religion
- Freud compared religion to a mental sickness, which was detrimental and restricting. Jung disagrees with this view and he contends that religion is positive and promotes the process of psychic personality development. The personality achieves its objective of individuation, by integrating the archetypes found in the collective unconscious with the unconscious mind.
- Freud asserted that religion is something that requires healing and curing rather than something that heals and makes one whole. Contrarily, Jung believed that the absence of religious conviction resulted in a failure to integrate the conscious and the unconscious, as religion is a fundamental activity for human psychic growth.
- Freud's negative view was further expressed in his beliefs that religion is infantile and prevents people from acting to better society since they would prefer to pray to a benevolent all-powerful father than take initiative.
- Freud believed that each individual human mind creates its own version of God, while for Jung, God was a reality emerging from the human collective unconscious.
- Furthermore, Freud perceived symbols as a person's attempt to escape reality, whereas Jung considered symbols as a means of learning about realities that were inherently unknown.
- Overall, while Freud considered religion from a pessimistic view, Jung saw it as a psychological component—the "Self"—within each of us that is capable of developing wisdom and insight
