Light is electromagnetic radiation that has properties of waves. The electromagnetic spectrum can be divided into several bands based on the wavelength. The refractive index varies with wavelength, this causes white light to split into constituent colours when refracted. When a wave propagates with its phase velocity in any medium, the electric field creates a disturbance in the charges (electrons of an atom) which is proportional to the electric susceptibility of the medium. Similarly, the magnetic field creates a disturbance proportional to the magnetic susceptibility.
