How does social loafing occur in large groups?

Expert Solution
Introduction

Social loafing has a detrimental effect on the group's success and therefore slows down the whole organization's efficiency. Leads to Weak Team Spirit: The whole team feels demotivated and demoralized if few participants become sluggish and hesitant, making the least effort in the community.

Explanation

During a joint group activity, social loafing happens when there is a reduction in individual commitment due to other people's social pressure. It occurs because, in a way, the presence of others dissipates social pressure to perform; a person feels as though the pressure is shared by other people.

Social loafing is when people spend less time on a job in groups than they would if they were doing it alone. In large groups, where morale is poor and where the individuals in the group do not see their contribution impacting the result, social loafing is more likely.
