THE PERSISTENCE OF PAGANISM
IN THE COUNTRYSIDE
The persistence of paganism in the countryside remained an ongoing and serious
problem for the clergy. Bishop Martin of Braga (c. 520-580), in On the Castigation
of Rustics, a letter to another bishop in Spain that he expected to be delivered
as a sermon to peasants, denounced Christian converts for retaining craditional
religious beliefs, practices, and cults despite the pact they had made with God
in baptism. In particular, he railed against the peasants" worship of sacred crees
and stones and their attempt to divine the future through magic. Following is an
excerpt from On the Castigation of Rustics.
