Question

Lab 12 how do you get oxidation no for the Cl and the CH3 substituents for this molecule?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The oxidation number of any elements is decided by the charge on the atom and bonds made by atom

If the atom is making bond with atom which is less electronegative, than it will give 1- oxidation number for single bond, 2- oxidation number for double bond and 3- oxidation number for triple bond

If the atom is making bond with atom which is more electronegative, than it will give 1+ oxidation number for single bond, 2+ oxidation number for double bond and 3+ oxidation number for triple bond

If the atom is making bond with another same atom, than the oxidation number will be 0 because of this bond

Hence the net oxidation number of atom = sum of oxidation numbers coming as per the above criteria
