Question
  1. Mosses are very good at absorbing water. Peat moss, also known as sphagnum moss, is particularly good at holding water, which is why it is often used in horticulture to improve soil structure and drainage.  If you made a wet mount of a sphagnum moss leaf on a microscope slide and observed it with a compound light microscope, it would look like the image on the right.  In that image of the magnified leaf, label a water-holding cell, the location of photosynthetic cells, and a reinforcing rib.

5) How do mosses survive without vascular tissue?

Left: sphagnum moss (peat moss)
right: a single magnified sphagnum leaf

Expert Solution
Step 1

Vascular tissue is a specialized tissue present in plants which is responsible for conducting water and nutrients throughout the plant.

* Mosses are the plants which usually do not contain this vascular tissue.

* They contains many adaptations which allow them to absorb and transport water and nutrients.
